Essential Questions and Inquiry using Novels Reading Response Log - When responding to quotes, chapter titles, and instead of doing chapter summaries, I have students complete reading response logs. Especially when we are doing literature circles. Quote Analysis - I am big on students respondine to quotes in the greater context of the novel. Here is the criteria sheet I give them when responding to quotes in paragraph format. I then provide detailed feedback to each student referring back to the criteria sheet. Quote Analysis #2 - This is a simple, but effective way to see what students are thinking as they read. Provide them with the quotes, or just have them pic their on. R.A.C.E. Rubric - Answering open-ended response questions is an important task. I have found using the R.A.C.E. strategy to be effective. We start off by Restating the question, Answer the question Citing examples from the text, then Explain how the EVIDENCE from the text supports your answer. I have included a rubric I use for students to self assess and then for me to assess. Obviously it doesn't work for basic comprehension questions, but for the meatier inference and connecting questions, this is a great assessment tool. Please note I found the image at the bottom of the assessment rubric on Pinterest and traced it back to a variety of sources; therefore, I am not sure who to give intitial credit to. |
Taking SnapShots of the Novel: (Instagram them!! So to speak)
A simple task really - Imagine you could take a snapshot of a scene from this section of your book. Draw and color what you “see” of the setting when you read. Add a clever caption to it. Text Message Conversations Select two main characters from this section of your book and imagine they are having a conversation about an event in this section of the book. Write what they might say in a few text messages to each other – please include enough details that we can infer the event. Free Template Download on Teachers Pay Teachers iphonefaketext.comFake iPhone Text Messages Character Study - Love these templates, refer to them on several of the suggestion pages Literature Circle Review Questions - I have students complete writing activities at the end of a literature circle unit.
